How is that possible?
So many ties that bind. So many obligations.
What if you could move anywhere… during any period of time?
Where would you go? What would you be doing?
I decided to go to Manhattan and move with some recent Juilliard School of Dance grads and upperclassmen. What happens in present time 21st century when talented young people are fully dedicated to moving at an extremely high skill level?
Here’s one example of what I discovered in a moment of time.
What would happen if these young people chose another time and space to be trained in movement?
How about 1000 years ago ? Ballet did not exist then. While the Western World was in the midst of Dark Ages, other parts of the planet like Africa, North America, Asia, and Australia were culturally progressing. What might these young be doing?
What world would they most vibe to or feel at home with? Where would you want to go and be? It’s an intriguing question. Have you thought in some detail what is most important to you? And what culture would be a fit for those values?
A 1000 years ago the city of Hangzhou in China was called a “paradise” and “the most beautiful and noble city in the world” by visitors from Venice.
Or over 2,500 years ago in Athens where they understood that physical activity was a major key to the health of the individual and society. Drama, science, philosophy were systematized. The Greeks challenged themselves to be the best they could possibly be. And so they began this concept of what mean leisurely learning. It was called school. Yes, school meant leisure!
Or go further back in time. How about a civilization that had indoor plumbing 4,000 years before Paris or London and thrived without any wars for 700 years? They were called Harappans and lived in the Indus Valley.
